The plainspoken, forthright appearance of a rural couple in Grant Wood’s painting American Gothic set me thinking about a quintessential Indian duo. Who better than the vegetable vendor on my street and the fisherwoman with her expertly balanced basket. The grace and colour of her accessories take away some of the drudgery of her life and his carefully arranged headload and practical plaid muffler are a statement of the hard work he puts into his life. All through a hot, sequined day under the Indian sun.
